Developed by Sun Microsystems, Java is a high-level, general-purpose programming language. It's class-based, concurrent and object-oriented. Java was originally created for developing programs for handheld devices and set-top boxes but became a favorable choice for client-server web applications. This programming language can run on all platforms that support Java. Its syntax is somewhat similar to C++, but stricter in that functions and variables must be clearly defined. Its programs contain classes that are used to define methods and objects. Java is designed to allow developers to write once and run anywhere (WORA). Its applications are compiled in bytecode and run on the JVM (Java Virtual Machine). Java can be used in frontend development as an applet and to power backend technologies like JBoss and Apache. This programming language can be found in game consoles and mobile apps, as well as on the Android platform.
Java developers usually have a four-year degree in computer science or engineering along with years of experience. They will know how to implement object-oriented design patterns and can create code effectively. These specialists understand concurrency and multithreading, CRUD operations, SQL queries, data structures, JVM and memory management. They're familiar with technologies like Spring, Apache Struts and Maven, as well as testing frameworks such as JUnit and Spock. Java developers can demonstrate great communication, analytical and problem-solving skills. They're experienced with JavaServer Pages, servlets, how to use profilers and garbage collection algorithms. These specialists are knowledgeable of CSS, JavaScript, HTML, J2EE, UNIX, Linux and protocols such as IP and HTTP. They may also have experience with version control, and cloud platforms like AWS or Azure.
