Visual UI Designers are usually members of a software development team. They are often tasked with creating web layouts, creating product illustrations and printed materials, designing iconography and creating presentations that will be released to the public. Visual UI Designers are responsible for maintaining design standards and keeping the same look and feel throughout the software and advertising materials. Responsibilies can include building storyboards, creating proof of concept mockups and possible demos or prototypes. Visual UI Designers should always be conducting ongoing research of web-based user interface best practices. Candidates should hold a degree in fine arts of graphic design and be able to demonstrate skills such as creativity, attention to detail, design software expertise, teamwork and good communication skills.
In the field of visual UI design, about half of the workforce have one to four years of experience and another 25% have five to nine years of experience. Some skillsets that can affect the pay grade include knowledge in Dreamweaver, Adobe Photoshop and Cascading Style Sheets. Depending on the company, some employers look for more skills in user interface design and interaction design while others may seek candidates that have knowledge with physics engines or flash-based programming.
